The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K. Increases in August 2014

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K. increased 0.4 percent in August to 112.5 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent increase in July, and a 0.7 percent increase in June.

At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for the U.K., a measure of current economic activity, increased 0.2 percent in August to 107.6 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent increase in July, and a 0.1 percent increase in June.

The LEI's upward trend since last summer has moderated in recent months. As a result, its six-month growth rate has also slowed compared to six months ago. Meanwhile, the six-month growth rate of the CEI has remained at about the same level over the past year. Taken together, the composite indexes suggest that economic activity is likely to continue advancing through the rest of the year, although the pace is not likely to pick up considerably.
