"E-commerce Grows 24% In 2014 And Greater Access To Smartphones Helps Boost Mobile Commerce", Says E-bit

2014 presented a quite positive result in Brazilian e-commerce, having registered a 24% growth in relation to 2013. Revenue reached R$ 35.8 billion, resulting from the 103.4 million orders placed, 17% higher than the previous year. This and other pieces of information comprise the 31st WebShoppers, report on Brazilian e-commerce disclosed by E-bit, a specialized company in e-commerce information.

Overall, Brazil totals 61.6 million one-time e-consumers who have already made at least one purchase over the Internet. In 2014, 51.5 million were active and, out of these, 10.2 million were newcomers, who had their first experience. The average ticket was R$ 347, an amount 6% higher than the amount registered in 2013. By the end of 2015, E-bit predicts that e-commerce will reach R$ 43 billion in sales, 20% higher than last year.

"Each year, we notice a greater maturing of the e-commerce sector in Brazil. On one hand, the stores are improving the browsing and purchasing experience on their websites, and on the other hand, consumers are trusting more and enjoying this convenience with several advantages offered by online purchase", explains the Executive Director at E-bit, Pedro Guasti.

Most sold categories

Fashion & Accessories continues leading among most sold categories over the Internet, with 17% of share in the volume of orders. It is followed by Cosmetics & Perfumery/Personal Care/Health (15%), Appliances (12%), Telephony and Mobile phones (8%), and Books/Subscriptions and Magazines (8%).

Mobile commerce already reaches 9.7%

With more and more people having access to smartphones and tablets, mobile commerce, i.e., sales performed through mobiles devices via browsers, currently accounts for 9.7% of sales over the Internet in the country. Most of these transactions derive from smartphones (56%), having exceeded the use of tablets (which started the year with 60%) for this purpose.

Increase in purchases on international websites

International websites have grown in Brazilian's preference when it comes to acquiring a new product via web. Currently, 4 out of 10 Brazilians have completed a purchase on these virtual stores over the last year. Chinese websites alone account for 55% of the last transaction performed by the end of 2014.

Overall, in 2014, the purchases completed by Brazilians on international websites reached R$ 6.6 billion, which is equivalent to 18% of the total sales registered in Brazilian e-commerce websites.
