There Will Be a Lot of Give, Take Needed Before IoE Really Arrives

By Andy Marken

I'm not real scared of IoT (Internet of Things). You know, boxes talking to boxes talking to trucks talking to who knows what.
IoE (Internet of Everything) bothers me because that means my car will talk to the environmental control system at home to the Smart TV to the refrigerator to my pajamas.

The Pros, Cons of Software vs. Hardware RAID

By Larry O'Connor, founder/CEO, Other World Computing

The other day I watched my son go to iTunes, stream a video to his computer and thought how much more powerful our systems are today than 10 or so years ago.
Back then I recalled going to a computer store where a friend made a major upgrade to his system. He bought a large, expensive MPEG-2 card that would allow him to play DVDs smoothly, flawlessly.

Cyberworld Needs Better Personal Intelligence, Common Sense

You may have noticed over the past six+ months or so that bad folks and evil doers have been exposing software, infrastructure and cloud service vulnerabilities with devastating results:
- Heartbleed infecting 10s of thousands of servers
- Someone burrowing into AWS management structure and wiping out a customer's customer base
- Folks building in backdoors to "handle" things

The Temptations of Web Data May Be Too Great to Resist

By Andy Marken

Living online with all the free stuff (content, storage, data, assistance, education, health advice, whatever) is great as long as you don't think too much about it.

What happens when you ask and don't like the answer?

The site search engine will simply say, "Here are a few others" ... pick your poison.

The online world is so rich with information, images and opinions, you can find anything you need ... and more.

IoT is a Long-Term Work-in-Progress ... Real Long Term

“There is so much in this world that I do not understand. I have absolutely no idea how it works. I have absolutely no idea how you are able to do some of the things you do, but I believe there's a reason for that as well. I only hope we understand that reason before it's too late.’ - Councillor Harmann, “The Matrix Reloaded,” Warner Brothers, 2003By Andy Marken

Back in ancient history, I saw this guy's email address – 32AK4#56ZD@compuserve (or something like that), and thought this has got to be the stupidest thing ... ever.

No normal person could ever remember that!

After we humanized addresses, some folks hung onto those series of characters/numbers as a badge of superiority or something.

Thunderbolt 2.0 Eliminates the I/O Bottleneck

Back in the mid-'90s, USB (Universal Serial Bus) did a good job standardizing the dizzying array of cables and connectors used to connect, communicate and deliver power between computers and a wide range of external devices. The industry-adopted standard simplified the bus and communications protocols so a single connector interface could be used for a wide range of devices.

Just to set the record straight, I didn't see any of the unclothed actress photos and didn't even bother searching for them after my wife told me she blocked all the locations on my devices.

Just looking, staring, ogling never seemed very satisfying to me.

Were the exposed individuals really that upset or acting?

Finally, Security is a Priority for Agencies, Companies, Individuals

By Andy Marken
I'm not much of a TV fan but I do like good documentaries so I got hooked on Person of Interest at the very beginning.
Of course, I've always felt most people are inherently good and governments are inherently evil.
I've also understood that those service agreements for all the "free" services I get online and in the cloud meant they were getting something in return, something that they could ... monetize.

Success is All about Managing Failure

By Larry O'Connor, CEO, Other World Computing

It was tough making this year's annual company picnics – back-to-back meetings, a redeye back to make one picnic and an early morning flight to make our next location's picnic.
Attending our company picnics has always been important to me because it gives me a chance to both recognize and encourage teamwork. Perhaps most important, it gives me an opportunity to meet some of our newest, brightest team members and get a sense as to where our most valuable asset is going to take us tomorrow.
