Regarding the Best of the Show - Diamond Pentaward 2014

evian Pure Drop created for the Danone group by the French agency Grand Angle.

It is very hard to reinvent yourself in the mineral water sector when you cannot change the product itself. Therefore innovations relate to three areas: format, packaging design or distribution methods. Rarely all three at once. By inventing "The Drop" evian achieved the feat of bringing innovation to all three, with the extra bonus of riding the wave of nomadism and connectivity. The Drop is available in Paris, London and Geneva exclusively, and is being sold in the street by appealing three-wheelers, in shops, spas, newsstands and in partnership with exclusive brands (Dessange, Velib, Segafredo, Hilton, Lindt, ...). The Drop design has the same capacity as a glass of water (20cl) and aims to create a new ritual of consumption: I'm thirsty, I grab a Drop, I open the lid, I drink, I collapse it with one hand and I drop the package in the recycle bin. Where can the Drop be found? Just twitter #evianjaisoif to see the nearest point of sale. The Evian Drop is a breakthrough, minimalist design that is modern, organic and chic. It is therefore only natural that the international Pentawards jury has awarded the one and only Diamond Pentaward 2014 to the EVIAN DROP.

In addition to the Diamond Pentaward trophy, Danone received a copy of the Esko Suite 10 software worth ?5,000, an amazing programme for design and visualization, specially created for high performance packaging.

Pentawards 2014 : 5 Platinum Pentawards, the Best in each Category

Besides the Diamond Pentaward, the best of the show (Evian - Pure Drop), the international jury chaired by Gérard Caron awarded five special prizes, one per category.

The BEVERAGES Platinum

went to the 4,000,000 Absolut Originality bottles

created by Happytear (Sweden)

Did you enjoy last year's spectacular launch of Absolut Unique (which was awarded by the Diamond Pentawards 2013 - Best of the show) ? Then say hello to its elegant successor Absolut Originality, which further explores the possibilities of creative bottle design. This limited collection features four million individually designed bottles, making every single one of them a one-of-a-kind piece of Absolut art.

Swedish Glass Crafts Revisited

Taking inspiration from traditional Swedish glass crafts, every bottle of Absolut Originality has a drop of cobalt blue infused into its glass. This colouring technique has been used for centuries in hand-made art glass, but never before has it been applied to create four million original bottles. Added just as the molten glass goes into the mould at 1100°C, the drop of cobalt blue streams down inside the glass creating a unique streak of blue. At that temperature the cobalt is invisible, but as the glass cools off, a beautiful and unique blue infusion appears.

A Celebration Of Original Thinking

Absolut has always experimented with new techniques, going off the beaten track to develop innovative and artistic products, and Absolut Originality is a celebration of the original thinking that has always been the brand's creed. Adding a sophisticated contrast to the crystal clear glass, the blue streak makes each bottle original and unmistakably Absolut.

The FOOD Platinum

was won by the Pesing Design agency (China)

for the packaging of Qian's Gift rice

In the Chinese province of Guizhou, people still apply ancient techniques of rice cultivation, banning chemicals and letting nature do its work to produce the best organic rice. No industrialization, and no modern manufacturing methods either for packaging the rice: the plant fiber envelope is made by local paper-makers. Indigo is used in this region to dye clothing, so this was adopted for printing the information on the packaging, all applied by hand without any machine.

This distinctive design is environmentally friendly and a return to the origins of traditional production.

The BODY Platinum

is awarded to Mousegraphics (Greece)

for a packaging range for "Beatific" skin care products

For this new cosmetics line aimed at a middle to upper class clientele, a name was sought to express its equal blend of the aesthetic and the scientific. Inspired by art history, the word "Beatific" reflects the communion with the Divine, so as to be able to share its spiritual light and glory. With this name then signposting the meeting-point of Beauty and Science, the rest of the design follows accordingly: the abstract and ethereal light patterns on the packaging, the use of translucent material, the 4-colour iridescent palette, and the simple and elegant typography.

The OTHER MARKETS Platinum

is attributed to Studio Kluif (The Netherlands)

for the packaging of "Blonde Poulain" printer paper

Everyone has already seen the portraits people make when they play around with a photocopier or a scanner. This simple idea resulted in a successful design for this small copying/printing paper company from Spain. No photographer or professional models were involved: just the company staff and a scanner. The resulting images are used randomly and customers can choose from nine different faces. The next portrait series will soon be made by the customers themselves, through a competition launched on Facebook.

The LUXURY Platinum

goes to Lavernia & Cienfuegos Design (Spain)

for the luxurious box of "Extrem" sliced ham

Extrem's flagship product, superior quality sliced ham, deserved a prestigious new packaging, so that it could be bought as a special gift, at a time when the brand was repositioning itself in gourmet shops around the world. The packaging created by the Lavernia & Cienfuegos agency conveys the exceptional quality of the product so that it can stand comparison with other high-end delicacies, such as caviar and foie gras. In matt black, with a contrasting golden handle in the form of a small, elegant pig, it doubles as a serving-tray for stylishly presenting the finest cuts of Iberian ham. This luxury in the food sector won over the jury, rightly so!

The 8th edition of the Pentawards in figures

This eighth edition of the Pentawards received over 1500 entries from 5 continents and 53 countries. Despite the global economic crisis and the widespread cost reduction that goes with it, the Pentawards show an increase of nearly 7% in enrollment over the previous year.

In addition to the Diamond Pentaward and the 5 Platinum Pentawards, the international jury also awarded 50 Gold Pentawards among the 55 categories competing this year. Silver and Bronze Pentawards were also presented. In total, 28 countries are represented among the winners.

These most beautiful packaging designs in the world can all be seen on www.pentawards.org.
