Freescale Expands RF Mobile Radio Portfolio with New Device for Handheld Applications

Advanced 6W product based on Airfast RF technology delivers exceptional performance and output power; establishes Freescale as only supplier to support power levels spanning from 5W to 75W

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL), the leading provider of RF power technology, today introduced a new 6W device for handheld mobile radio applications called the AFT05MS006N. With this latest addition to its flagship Airfast RF power solutionsportfolio, Freescale is the only supplier capable of supporting all power levels of relevance to the mobile radio space, from 5W handheld units to 75W digital mobile radios and base stations.

"With a product family that spans the handheld, mobile and base station segments of the land mobile market, the breadth of the Airfast RF power solutions portfolio enables the reuse of designs across a range of mobile radio offerings, speeding time to market and increasing both efficiency and productivity."

Though targeted for handheld mobile radio applications, the exceptional flexibility and wide power range of the 6W AFT05MS006N make it broadly applicable as a driver in higher powered mobile radio solutions, as well. The 6W AFT05MS006N integrates circuitry to increase stability, thereby simplifying design and supporting a wide range of operating conditions. In addition, the new device is extremely rugged, enabling optimal performance even in harsh operating conditions such as public safety, professional mobile radio and machine-to-machine communications environments.

"Freescale's new 6W device provides the high performance, small size, and improved output power designers need to meet increasingly stringent requirements for next-generation mobile radio products," said Ritu Favre, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale's RF Division. "With a product family that spans the handheld, mobile and base station segments of the land mobile market, the breadth of the Airfast RF power solutions portfolio enables the reuse of designs across a range of mobile radio offerings, speeding time to market and increasing both efficiency and productivity."

The newest addition to the Airfast RF power solution portfolio is designed to survive > 65:1 VSWR, even with simultaneous overvoltage and overdrive stressing the amplifier and its RF power transistors. Additionally, the efficiency of the Airfast devices is on average 65 percent, an improvement when compared to module-based solutions, which typically range from 25 to 40 percent in efficiency.

Freescale also recently released to production the previously announced AFT09MS015N, which is an ideal solution for the new class of 10W mobile radio designs. The device features the high gain, extreme ruggedness and wide bandwidth capability typical of the Airfast portfolio for mobile radio applications.
