NEC Commissions 5.7MWh of Grid Energy Storage Installations in the UK

Six New GSS™ Sites in the United Kingdom Bring Total Global NEC Grid Battery Installations to Nearly 50MWh

NEC Corporation today announced that NEC Energy Solutions, a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced energy storage systems, has completed commissioning of six new GSS™ sites in the United Kingdom for Northern Powergrid. In total, the systems have nearly 2.9MW of power and 5.7MWh of energy storage capacity, and were installed in substations in both urban and rural locations as part of the Customer-Led Network Revolution (CLNR), a three-year smart grid project in the U.K. funded in part through the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets' (Ofgem) Low Carbon Networks Fund. The largest, a 2.5MW, 5MWh GSS™ in Darlington, is located in an urban industrial area, while one of the smallest, a 50kW GSS™, is located in a residential area in Wooler, a small town in the northern part of England.

New site in Hunzenschwil, Switzerland - Voith expands services for the energy sector

 

Voith is strengthening its service offering for power plants by adding another site.

With a new location in the canton of Aarau in Switzerland, the company is targeting local power plants with services such as maintenance, upgrading and inspection. It is the first Voith site for industrial services in Switzerland.

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council Takes Top Honors for the Third Straight Year in the Can Manufacturers Institute Recycling Contest

Girls Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council receives National Recycling Champion award in the third annual Great American Can RoundUp (GACR) Scout Council Challenge by recycling 32,199 pounds of aluminum cans and generating more than $16,000 for scouting activities. The top recycling troop of the 2014 GACR Scout Council Challenge, Troop 50244 from Hutchinson, KS, won $500, plus the value of the cans collected for recycling nearly 1,500 pounds of aluminum per scout.

SE4ALL Africa Hub convenes East, Central and Southern African countries to move forward on SE4All

 

The SE4ALL Africa Hub convened representatives of the Eastern, Central and Southern African Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) focus countries for a workshop on the development of SE4ALL Action Agendas and Investment Prospectuses in Addis Ababa from May 29-30. The meeting took place following a successful launch of the Action Agenda process for the ECOWAS region in March and the Africa Launch of the SE4ALL Decade during the African Development Bank's Annual Meetings in Kigali.

ProCom awards Biofore Concept Car as the Communications Campaign of the year

ProCom, the Finnish Association of Communications Professionals, has awarded the Biofore Concept Car project by UPM and Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences as the Communications Campaign of the year.

The Biofore Concept Car — showcased at the International Geneva Motor Show in March — demonstrates the innovative use of biomaterials in the car industry. In the Concept Car, the majority of parts traditionally made from plastic have been replaced with durable, high quality biomaterials — UPM Formi and UPM Grada —  and the vehicle runs on UPM's renewable wood-based diesel, UPM BioVerno.
