Staff, Globe and Mail reach tentative deal

Unionized employees of the Globe and Mail reached a tentative agreement with the national newspaper this afternoon mere minutes before a deadline for journalists, advertising sales reps and circulation staff to walk off the job.

The recommended deal will be presented to the membership, represented by Unifor, for a ratification vote in short order. No details of the tentative agreement will be released before then.

The Globe and Mail's 374 unionized employees have been in a legal strike position since July 1. They turned down a company offer on July 2 by 92.3 percent. Both sides returned to the bargaining table for two days with respected mediator Kevin Burkett to try to reach a deal.

The Globe's members are among 2,600 media members of Unifor Local 87-M, which represents many newspapers and other media across southern Ontario.
