Sharp Selects ABBYY to Provide OCR Functionality to New Solution

ABBYY FineReader Engine Gives Sharp MFP Capabilities Enabling Users to Meet Document Recognition and Management Requirements

ABBYY®, a leading global provider of document recognition, data capture, and linguistic technologies and professional services, announced today that Sharp Corporation, a worldwide developer of one-of-a-kind home entertainment products, appliances, energy products and solutions, and networked multifunctional office solutions, has selected ABBYY's FineReader Engine to provide Optical Character Recognition (OCR) functionality to its new solution. Delivering document recognition and management capabilities to the Scan Accessory Kit of Sharp MFP's accessory, FineReader Engine helps organizations simplify their work with paper documents and more easily manage information flow.

"Our customers are looking for solutions that can take the paper documents they work with every day, and turn them into useable information across their business," said Toyoaki Nanba, Unit General Manager, Document Systems Unit for Sharp's Document Solutions Division. "Adding OCR to our solutions allows us to not only make information easier to digitize, but enables businesses to streamline information management processes. ABBYY is a leading provider of OCR technology, and we are happy to be working with them to deliver this critical functionality to our customers."

Scan Accessory Kit converts scanned paper documents into electronic files in various formats and allows users to reuse the information more efficiently.

ABBYY FineReader Engine is a Software Development Kit (SDK) that provides developers, integrators, and OEMs the tools they require to integrate OCR functionality into their applications and hardware solutions. The ABBYY recognition platform delivers award-winning OCR, intelligent character recognition (ICR), barcode, checkmark, field-level/zonal recognition, and PDF conversion enabling scanned documents and images to be transformed into searchable and editable document formats. ABBYY solutions support recognition and conversion of full pages or selected zones that have a variety of applications such as conversion of paper archives and creation of digital libraries, creation of searchable texts for insertion into document workflows, as well as extraction of key text for input into databases and other back-end systems.

"It is no longer enough for MFPs or scanners to simply scan an image of documents as customers now need the information locked on the page to be easily searchable and portable into backend systems," said Joe Budelli, senior vice president of Sales at ABBYY North America Headquarters. "FineReader Engine enables OEMs to easily integrate this functionality into their solutions, enhancing the value their hardware or software can bring to end users. We are very happy to be working with Sharp to bring highly-accurate OCR to their new solution."
