Broadcom Licenses MIFARE

Protocol Support Expands NFC Offerings for Transportation, Ticketing and Access

Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced it has licensed MIFARE, a widely deployed protocol for contactless ticketing, transportation and access applications. With this adoption, Broadcom supports a growing set of near field communication (NFC) and related payment applications in mobile phones, tablets and wearable devices.

The steady increase in adoption of NFC has expanded opportunities for companies that ensure interoperability across multiple platforms, protocols and standards. Broadcom's objective is to enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to integrate a wide array of applications that deliver a simplified and consolidated user experience for payments, access and contactless ticketing. The company is committed to providing enhanced support and increased interoperability for a range of technologies as the market evolves.

"Broadcom is focused on accelerating the adoption of NFC technology by supporting a broad set of protocols and standards in our growing portfolio of products," said Dino Bekis, Broadcom Vice President, Product Marketing, Wireless Connectivity. "The addition of MIFARE allows us to tap into a mature ecosystem, helping our customers to expand use cases and enabling our company to continue the advancement of NFC applications."

"With Broadcom, a top 10 player in the semiconductor industry, we have significantly increased the convenience of MIFARE on mobile platforms and wearables. MIFARE is an open license that is broadly available through key technology providers in the mobile ecosystem," said Ulrich Huewels, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Business Line Secure Identification Solutions, NXP Semiconductors. "This announcement will further enhance the ability for OEMs, system integrators, operators and, in the end, consumers to use mobile services such as access, ticketing, loyalty and micropayment via MIFARE."
