IT and Engineering Employment Starts 2015 on A Strong Note

The number of IT jobs grew 0.4 percent sequentially last month to 4,838,500, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment has grown by 4.7% since January 2014 adding 216,800 IT workers.

Engineering job growth strengthened in January, up 0.2 percent sequentially to 2,521,900. On a year-over-year basis, engineering employment has grown by 1.8% since January 2014 adding 43,700 engineering workers.
Note: This month, both indices reflected the Bureau of Labor Statistics' annual rebenchmarking of employment data as well as adjustments to the algorithm used to calculate the indices. For this reason, caution should be used when comparing this month's data to data contained in prior releases.

"In January, IT and engineering employment showed strength as we kicked-off 2015. Following robust growth in 2014, all indications are that we will have another strong year for IT and engineering employment in 2015," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "While I am confident demand will remain strong absent a macro-economic or political shock, an inadequate supply of talent in high demand skill sets will continue to be a challenge. Without a significant increase in the availability of talent by growing the domestic IT and engineering workforce or increasing the availability of high-skilled foreign professionals, all industries dependent on technical talent will continue to be at risk of not having their needs fully met," added Roberts.
