Pharmapack Europe 2014: Now more than ever, compliance and safety are drivers of innovation

In less than three weeks, on 12 and 13 February 2014, the Pharmapack Europe conference and exhibition will bring together all the leading names in the healthcare industry at Paris Expo at the Porte de Versailles. More than 3,200 visitors and 340 exhibitors originating from more than 70 countries are expected to attend the event in its new venue.

The thirteenth edition of this leading European event for innovative packaging and delivery systems for medicinal and healthcare products will be held in a new and more spacious location, yet remains dedicated to maintaining its extremely high quality standards.

Pharmapack Europe will offer its visitors a comprehensive overview of the current situation in the sector, with a programme comprising more than 40 semi-scientific conferences. "The presentations attest to a very high level of technical expertise and innovation", observes Franck Pavan, Business Development Manager of Aquitaine Pharm International, Pierre Fabre Médicament Production.

More than 40 conferences with a high level of technical expertise and innovation

Chaired by eminent industrial, institutional and academic experts from all over the world, there will be four conference sessions dedicated to topics that are crucial to development strategy and innovation within the healthcare community.

Drug Delivery and Drug/Device Combination Products

This session will review developments in this area, taking into account a number of important aspects. "This session will offer the opportunity to discuss opinions, to gain an overview of regulatory issues to be addressed and the latest innovations in the field, and to understand the coming challenges in terms of production. Major names in the field of delivery devices will be taking part, offering a valuable contribution to discussions and providing information that will be of interest to all participants", emphasises Joël Richard, Ph.D., Vice-President, Peptides, CMC & Engineering, Ipsen, who will be leading the session with Dr. Yves T. Tillet, CEO of White-Tillet Consultants & Experts.

Packaging of Liquid and Injectable Forms

These presentations will look at emerging markets for injectables, as well as innovations that facilitate the use of injection devices, and new packaging solutions that offer features suited to the complexity of these products. "Other presentations will address drug-related innovations, relating to drug manufacturing methods and ways of targeting the disease more closely in order to avoid side effects and treatments that have little or less effect", says Franck Pavan, who will be co-chairing this session with Jean-Louis Saubion, Hospital Pharmacist responsible for the coordination of clinical trials at Bordeaux University Hospital.

Packaging: Proper Medicinal Drug Use and Patient Safety

This session will provide an opportunity to find out about new technologies that facilitate use of treatments through ergonomic packaging and user-friendly delivery methods in the widest sense, and to gain a better understanding of the importance of working closely with patients. The presentations will also look at new solutions and approaches aiming to improve compliance with treatments by masking their complexity. "This is an important point. This area requires great consideration in order to focus on the patient and avoid technology for technology's sake", explains David Dronneau, Technology, Innovation, Process & Solutions Manager in R&D Clinical Supplies at Sanofi, who will be co-chairing the session with Professor Philippe Arnaud, Hospital Pharmacist, Chief of Pharmacy Department at Hôpital Bichat-Claude Bernard AP-HP, and ANSM Expert.

Future Healthcare Packaging: Materials, Sustainability and Collaborative Innovation

These presentations will highlight innovation prospects in the packaging of healthcare products, as well as looking at new materials with applications and innovative functions within this field. "The session will also showcase the current trends in terms of innovation and innovative products, which can arise yet be overlooked. With this in mind, the benefit of a session like this is that it gives people the opportunity to talk about their innovations and to demonstrate advantages that are sometimes not immediately obvious", comments Dr Pascal Bezou, R&D Scientific Project Manager/IV Set Project Manager at B. Braun Medical SAS, who will be leading the session with Patrick Vuillermoz, General Manager of Plastipolis.

A technical symposium and round table discussion on two key topics

In addition to the conference programme, Pharmapack Europe also offers its visitors the opportunity to participate in a technical symposium entitled "How to understand and deploy all aspects of Track & Trace in the pharmaceutical industry" and a round table discussion on the subject of Responsible Innovation.

The technical symposium will be held on Wednesday 12 February. Given its importance and complexity, we will dedicate an entire day to this subject in order to enable participants to talk to leading experts about the technological and regulatory challenges of implementing serialisation and Track & Trace systems, and to obtain responses to their specific problems in these areas.

The Responsible Innovation round table, which will be held on Thursday 13 February, will offer members of the healthcare community the opportunity to share their thoughts and discuss their views on the topic of "Driving sustainable growth for SMEs: what are the key issues relating to responsible innovation in the healthcare sector?".

More than 340 leading suppliers in the pharmaceutical packaging supply chain, all under the same roof!

Pharmapack Europe 2014 will bring together a record number of exhibiting companies, with more than 340 worldwide suppliers specialising in primary, secondary and tertiary packaging as well as drug delivery systems. The exhibition has recorded excellent growth in terms of the number of participants (up 15%) and international representation, with more than 65% of exhibiting companies originating from outside France. There has been a marked increase in participation from Eastern Europe, the USA, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

As a technological showcase encompassing all the capabilities of the pharmaceutical packaging supply chain, the Pharmapack Europe exhibition is continuing to improve its offering. This year, it will welcome 76 new companies specialising in polymers, injection moulding for injectable delivery systems and medical devices, labelling systems and serialisation.

Innovation Gallery and Pharmapack Europe Awards 2014: innovation takes centre-stage

For the first time, visitors to the exhibition will be able to optimise their technological intelligence with a tour of the Innovation Gallery. This area will offer visitors an exhaustive and immediate overview of the latest innovations brought to market by the show's exhibitors, including products put forward for the Pharmapack Awards.

In another first, the Pharmapack Europe Awards ceremony will be held within the Innovation Gallery, an area perfectly suited to the event. This will take place at the end of the first morning. This much anticipated ceremony will reveal an excellent crop of innovative packaging and delivery system solutions that take patients' needs into account and significantly improve proper use of medications and compliance with treatments.
