The success story of Racespirit and the BMW Art car

Since 1975, artists from all over the world have turned BMW cars into real pieces of art. Amongst them were many well-known artists like Andy Warhol. In 2010, they asked the American artist Jeff Koons to design the 17th BMW Art Car for the 24 hours of Le Mans. For the first time in the history of the Art Car, the designs weren't painted onto the car, but were printed on vinyl. The German company Racespirit made the prints and wrapped the car. They made the prints with a Roland printer/cutter. The result is a truly magnificent race car that seems to be bursting with power and energy.

Wolfgang Schmid is since his teens passionate about racing. His company, Racespirit, makes designs and produces stickers for popular race teams. The company has built up a good reputation throughout the years. "We speak our clients' language. We understand their tight schedule and the confidentiality of certain things. We also do all the possible to bring challenges to a happy conclusion", says Wolfgang Schmid.

Racespirit made the pints for the 17th BMW Art Car. They used a printer from Roland DG for this. 20 Pantone colours had to be converted to CMYK and the Roland DG combined printer/cutter was the only one to pass the tests. "It is a great printer. The printer is reliable and always creates accurate results. It was the only printer that met Jeff Koons' demands", explains Wolfgang Schmid.

Racespirit's team wrapped three complete race cars and tens of spare parts since there always was a chance that something went wrong during training sessions and eventually, the Art Car had to start in Le Mans undamaged and perfectly wrapped. Wolfgang Schmid: "We appointed one person that was in charge of wrapping the cars, because every sticker had to be perfectly applied following the artist's design. We worked day and night to finish in time. That was certainly not an easy job, but we are very happy with the result!"
